Howard Hughes had legendary bouts of agoraphobia. He would be terrified of going anywhere or doing anything out of fear that something would happen. During these times, he would hole himself up in his haven.
I go through similar periods, which I call my "Howard Hughes periods." Various scenarios would fly through my mind from accidents to social anxieties.
However, lately I've been coming out of that shell. I even ventured out of the county, to Evansville. My good friend and assistant manager has practically begged me to take a vacation. We've agreed that it'd be best for me to have my car looked at before I go. So far, I'm thinking of seeing people in Virginia or Northern Indiana. There are people I miss in both places.
Defying fears of running into this one meth-head I know, I've even gone out drinking! So far, I'm batting a higher-than-average success rate when it comes to meeting new people.
I'm hanging out with people over at my place. But, like I'm always afraid of, cool people are more often than not connected to assholes. So, I find myself dealing with people who have overstayed their welcome in the land of the living.
That's not to say that I'd "show them the exit," but it falls within my responsibility to myself to push these people out of my personal world. I'm not a thug, meth-head, pill-popper, or anything like that. I don't belong in their sphere of reality, and they don't belong in mine. I need to purge them out of my life before they ruin my "people person" attitude.
